FRWA Events

The Farmington River Watershed Association conducts many specialized recreation, training, and natural resource and conservation programs. Most require pre-registration.

July 13, 2008, Farmington River Archaeology Canoe Trip, FULL: Led by Ken Feder, Professor of Anthropology, Central Connecticut State University, and the Farmington River Archeology Project.  Paddle with us along an ancient canoe route as we explore the fascinating culture and people who inhabited our Farmington River Valley thousands of years ago. FEES, please call FRWA at 658-4442 to register.

July 18, 2008, “Twilight on the Farmington” Canoe Trip, 5:45 PM - Led by Jay Kaplan, Naturalist and Director of Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton. Slip quietly down the River in search of wildlife at day’s edge, where daylight and darkness briefly meet. Jay will share his vast knowledge of the plants and animals visible along the Farmington River at twilight. FEES, please call FRWA at 658-4442 to register.

August 16, 2008, “Reading the River, Geology and Glacial History” Canoe Trip, 9:30 AM - Led by Brendan Hanrahan, writer, lecturer and publisher of the “Road to Discovery” guides to Connecticut’s Natural Wonders. FEES, please call FRWA at 658-4442 to register.

September 13, 2008, “Riparian Ecology”Canoe Trip, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM - Led by Bill Moorhead, Botanist for the Farmington Valley Biodiversity Project. Discover the native riparian flora of late summer. Carpool and walk/wade to explore several plant communities in different ecological zones along the Wild & Scenic stretch of the upper Farmington River. Wear appropriate footwear to wade in the stony shallows of the River as we seek out plants native to floodplain forest, alluvial wet meadow, riverbank beach, riverside ledge or stream gorge drip cliff. October 1, 2008, Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group Symposium, 8 am – 4 pm,
"Cherish Our Natural Heritage: Managing Invasives to Promote Native Diversity" Symposium at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT, open to all interested people. Keynote Speaker: Doug Tallamy. Cost is $40 (postmarked by September 10), late registration fee $55 (postmarked by September 24), Students $25; includes parking and sustainable food.
